Q18. You have been appointed as the Second Engineer of an eight years old vessel, recently purchased by your shipping company. Write a report to the engineering superintendent covering the inspection of main propulsion machinery carried out by you, to ensure its trouble free operation.

Engine overhauling and performance history has been collected. Found the critical spares and special tools are as per the list in handing over notes and properly placed.

following checks/inspections are carried out
During port stay:-
1.Main engine tried out with few ahead and astern movements from all three locations  that is bridge, engine control room and local control. found satisfactory
2. Scavenge space inspected. space checked for cleanliness, flaps free movement, liner condition, piston ring condition etc. found satisfactory.
3. Crankcase inspection carried out. space checked for metal particles, bearing conditions, con-rod bolts and their locking arrangements, shaft deflections etc. found satisfactory.
4. lube oil inspection. checked sump level,colour of oil, ordure etc. found satisfactory.
5. jacket water chemical tests. found properly treated water and no seawater traced.
6. holding down bolts and chocks were checked for any sign of fretting corrosion and lose bolts. no such sign observed.
7. cam box inspection carried out cam and roller surfaces were smooth and no metal particle and sludge debris etc. also the lube oil flow was satisfactory.
8. Automatic air starting valve and air distributor dismantlement and inspected for condition of working parts. Randomly selected cylinder air starting valves, fuel pumps and injectors for dismantlement and inspection of working parts. they all were found in satisfactory condition.
9. turbocharger inspection for blades and shaft condition. turbine blades were found clean and shaft trueness checked by rotating and stopping at random position which found good.

During sailing:-
1. vibrations and intactness of holding down and tie bolts were checked found satisfactory.
2.engine parameters & engine performance cards taken all were within limit.
3. shaft earthing connection and voltage values were checked and found within limit.
4. lube oil tests carried out by taking a sample after the one day of engine running. water crackling test and spot test shown good results.

suggestion:- since there is no major defect found, it is recommended that the PMS being followed should be kept continue.
