Answer EKG Question 5
Q5.
Hyper mist system in your ship often gets activated on top of
Incinerator unit. Write a letter to company, to introduce an additional
layer of activation for system, so that false alarm activation is
stopped.
Answer:-
To the Technical superintendent,
XYZ company.
Sub :-Report regarding False alarm of heat sensor over incinerator unit and possible remedial actions .
Dear Sir,
The heat sensor located on the top of incinerator often gets activated, investigations reveals that the alarm is fake.
possible causes:-
The sensor is close to the heat zone of the incinerator and hence it activates the alarm system.
The sensor is close to the heat zone of aux engines and hence it activates the alarm system.
The alarm is close to the bulkhead which got heated up by sunlight.
As per the FSS code Installation requirements
Positioning of detectors
Detectors shall be located for optimum performance. Positions near beams and ventilation ducts, or other positions where patterns of air flow could adversely affect performance, and positions where impact or physical damage is likely, shall be avoided. Detectors shall be located on the overhead at a minimum distance of 0.5 m away from bulkheads, except in corridors, lockers and stairways.
It is been measured and found that there is still some space within permissible limit above the incinerator up to which the detector can be relocated. consider this proposal for modification.
The action suggested should be followed up immediately as the false alarm cause panic among the crew/passengers. Further the false alarm is distracting the watch keepers from performing their duties normally.
Also deactivation of the alarm for is not a safe practice and has been avoided.
