Answer SSEP Question 33

Q33. State the regular routines carried out on the following system:
a. Self-contained Breathing apparatus (SCBA).
b. Accommodation Fixed Fire detection system.
Answer: A. SeIf-contained Breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Self-contained breathing apparatus consists of the following main parts;
1. Compressed air cylinder with valve.
2. Air demand valve with hose
3. Full face mask
4. Life guard - waist coat accessory.
5. Low pressure whistle
Maintenance
1. Immediately after use
(a) Remove the used cylinder irrespective of the pressure, and install a fully charged vessel.
(b) Unstrap the complete life guard, inspect the buckling arrangements and the accessory.
(c) The face mask is to be cleaned with a sanitizing towel thoroughly inspect for any damage on the sealing surface.
(d) Open the newly installed cylinder ensure there is no leak through the hose and the mask. If no leak close the valve and release the air. When the air pressure falls below 25% the LP indicating whistle shall Indicate the same.
2. Monthly inspection
(a) Complete apparatus has to be visually inspected. The Straps have to be completely unstrapped and inspected thoroughly.
(b) The face mask has to be visually inspected, cleaned and disinfected. The sealing face of the mask to be detached from the mask and checked for its condition. Perform functional leak test as recommended by the manufacturer.
(c) Ensure the cylinder pressure is in green region, usually about 275:300 PSI (19 - 21 bar). Check the next pressure test date, if due, replace with another valid cylinder.
3. Half yearly inspection
(a) Air flow and Static tests manufacturer's instructions of the air bottle.
(b) Clean and disinfect the air demand valve
4. Yearly inspection
(a) Pressure Reducer to be overhauled with new o-rinks, apply approved lubricant, prior to returning back into service test the reducer for proper operation.
(b) Cylinder valve is to be overhauled with new sealing ring and lubricated with approved lubricant.
5. 5 yearly inspection
(a) Renew waist coat and straps
(b) Renew face mask
6. 10 yearly Inspection
(a) Renew the air bottle with new ones.
(b) Completely renew all accessories including the straps and waist coat.
B. Accommodation Fixed Fire detection system.
Fire detection system on the accommodation is regularly inspected as per manufacturer recommendation and as mandated in the PMS system of the ship.
1. Weekly at least 10% of the detector in the accommodation system is checked visually and tested with smoke/heat/flame depending on the type of the detector.
2. As part of weekly test, atleast 1 loop is checked for open circuit test, by disconnecting one of the detector in the loop which will trigger alarm on the control panel.
3. Monthly atleast 30% of the detector is to be tested with smoke/flame/heat for proper functioning. The same is recorded with the identification of each detector tested.
4. Check manual call points weekly so that atleast 20% of the manual call points are checked monthly and tested.
