Q38. During unit overhauling of Main
engine, sudden rough weather caused accident in engine room. State what
all checks and precaution taken up prior to carry out such operation.
Answer: Checks and precaution taken up prior to carry out such operation.
Preparation:
Space around the main engine is cleared well before the maintenance work is commenced.
The floors shall be properly prepare and non-slippery provisions are applied floors around the main engine.
Engine is usually run on MDO at least 6-12 hours prior to stopping for any major maintenance work to ensure clean fuel in the system which will reduce contamination and residues while in progress.
Tools & Spares:
All required tools are identified and transported to the deck closer to its required location.
All necessary spares are identified, issued from the store and collected in safe manner.
Securing and lashing:
Major overhaul will involve replacing heavy items like Cylinder heads, Liners, Piston, connecting rod etc. Such heavy spares shall be stored and lashed in its designated location using proper securing arrangement.
Securing with unapproved fasteners will lead to failure of them and will cause damagein high seas.
Crane operation:
During rough weather the crane operation shall be discontinued to avoid swinging of crane with weight held.
Do not leave the crane hook hanging which will act as a swinging arm in rough weather and cause damage.
Always stow crane in its disignated position with the hook properly stowed and secured.
All signals shill be explained and agreed between all personnel involved in the task.
Spillages:
Cleaning of parts using solvents are diesel by soaking the parts in can swing out and spill causing accidents.
All cleaning containers to be closed with proper lid and the containers are to be stowed in proper position to avoid any spillages.
Slip trip & Falls:
Due to fluids, sludge, oil residues, fuel etc spilling on the floor make it slippery and personnel can injure due to slips.
Personnel working aloft or inside the crankcase should wear safety harness to avoid falls.
Personnel working on ladder can fall in heavy weather.
