Answer EKM Question 23

Q23. The failure of bridge control and remote control from engine control room has occurred during maneuvering of your vessel in closed waters.
(a) What all important data will be required to be monitored and recorded manually?
(b)Explain how as a Second Engineer you will organize your staff for effective watch keeping with special attention to maneuvering.

Answer:(a) In this emergency situation, the second engineer will take the engine controls at the emergency manoeuvring station close to the engine. A junior engineer will assist him in replying the telegraph and write the movements in the movement book assuming the auto data logger is not working. The watch keeping engineer either the fourth or the third engineer will monitor the following gauges and control manually assuming automation has also failed:

All c/w outlet temperatures from each unit
    Exhaust temperatures of all units.
    Main L/O Pressure.
    C/W inlet temperature.
L/O inlet and outlet temperatures at cooler.
    Starting Air pressure.
Scavenge air pressure and aux blower.scavenge air temperature.
T/C rpm, air cooler inlet and outlet temperatures and pressure drop through cooler.

(b) If the situation remains the same after full away the personnel in the engine room will be put on sea watches till the automation problem is resolved. The second engineer assisted by a junior engineer and a watch keeping rating will take over the 4-8 watch. similarly the third engineer assisted by a junior engineer or engine cadet along with watch keeping rating will take the 12-4 watch. similarly the 4th engineer suitably assisted will take over the 8-12 watch’

During arrival at and departure from ports the watches will be doubled for two hours each period suitably covered by the other two team heads namely the watch keeping engineers
